A Brief History of CT and CBCT (1971-2007)

Nobel Prize winner Sir Godfrey Hounsfield developed the first CT scanner at the Atkinson-Morley Hospital in London in 1971. Computed tomography quickly became an important technique in non-invasive diagnostics. Modern multi-slice helical CT scanners produce images of unsurpassed quality at ever increasing speeds and reducing radiation exposure.

With the increasing adoption of CT scans into standard treatment plans, a less expensive, lower dose method of obtaining radiographic 3D volume data was required. Quantative Radiology, recognizing this need, brought the first Cone Beam CT scanners into the medical arena in 1997. This was the first dedicated head CBCT scanner and proved to be low Dose at about 1/10 of the Effective Dose delivered by hospital based CT scanners at the time.

Cone Beam technology has been further developed and refined with flat panel detector technology allowing the adoption of a seated or standing position for the patient as apposed to supine, a more relaxing situation for nervous patients. There are an increasing number of manufacturers producing CBCT units and as always with increased competition standards are being driven higher and cost lower.
